darwin was perhaps right that human beings are involved in an intense "struggle for existence"... we have to compete for food, shelter, and whatever limited resources available... and such struggle echoes in varying proportions from individual needs to national interest to global trade and who knows even to cosmic proportions.

"of all human powers operating on the affairs of mankind, none is greater than that of competition." - hclay

being competitive have its benefits and its banes... it can make you better or bring out the worse in you.  if you know how to use it to your advantage then it can only give you benefits... only through competition be it sports or games, can you become a gracious teacher or a humble student.  play to win, if you ain't winning... play to learn.

i would have to admit i am competitive by nature, i like overcoming challenges, creating personal nemesis, enjoying friendly rivalry... anything to keep me interested and going for the price. i was not like this before; i remember shying away from grade school contemporaneous speaking contest, spelling bees or whatever... it took awhile before i actually became comfortable with whatever confidence i have now.

i suppose it all changed when i met darwin back in freshman high school... i am just the average joe, he  on the other hand is an accelerated honor student. too nerdy for my taste, thick glasses and oil slicked hair, but somehow we became friends... and i had this crazy mission to make him just like any average joe (in appearance and coolness anyway),but unknowingly his nerdiness rubbed on me as well  (he got me interested to reading and in history).  by sophomore we had to separate classes, him being the genius had to be in the exclusive honor class, i was left with the rest of the flock... this somehow made me prove to myself that any average joe can stand out despite the fact i'm not in their class.  this was the start of me becoming an over achiever (according to my guidance councillor anyway...) it’s a classic battle between pure genius and absolute hard work... a friendly rivalry that went on until the end of my high school years... but of course i could only do so much and eventually get outshined by my best bud. i did get the bragging rights of being the only none honor class student to be in the top 30 of the graduating batch. darwin was perhaps right; i should have been in their class.

"genius does what it must, and talent does what it can." - egbulwerlytton

everything needs to get a slice of the pie... no matter how small... the struggle is serious, tough and more often lethal.  nature made sure we compete; this is the only way it knows how to determine if we are fit to survive, to adapt, to evolve... pushing us to our limits to become better.
